Dr. Ashok Rajgopal

Dr. Ashok Rajgopal stands as a leading surgeon of prominence in India, specializing in knee replacement surgery and widely recognized as one of the most skilled practitioners in this field. With an illustrious career spanning over 30 years, Dr. Ashok currently holds the esteemed position of Chairman at Medanta Hospital, where he continues to make impactful contributions to the realm of orthopedics. His journey in the medical field began with a residency at Ormskirk General Hospital from 1983 to 1985, followed by a significant role as a senior physician at Moolchand Hospital in New Delhi from 1985 to 2004. During this period, from 1996 to 2004, he accomplished a fellowship from the International Medical Sciences Academy. Dr. Ashok also served as the director of the Department of Orthopedics at Sitaram Bhartia Institute from 2004 to 2009. His commitment to continuous learning is evident through his fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh in 2010. Since 2011, Dr. Ashok Rajgopal has been contributing his expertise as a senior consultant in the Department of Orthopedics at Fortis Research Center. Over the course of his distinguished career, he has successfully performed approximately 39,000 knee surgeries and more than 60,000 arthroscopic surgeries for sports injuries. Dr. Ashok has been a trailblazer in the field, being the first to conduct bilateral procedures, minimally invasive total knee replacement surgeries, and virtual total knee replacements using patient-specific instrumentation. Moreover, he was the pioneer in introducing gender-specific knees in India. His influence extends beyond surgery, as Dr. Ashok has designed and developed patented instruments for minimally invasive total knee replacement procedures, now utilized by surgeons worldwide. As a designer surgeon, he played a crucial role in the design team of the Persona knee system developed by Zimmer, further solidifying his legacy as a trailblazer in the orthopedic field.
