Dr. Chun Kee

Dr. Chun Kee Chung is a highly renowned Neurosurgeon in South Korea, boasting an impressive career spanning over 37 years. He is a distinguished alumnus of Seoul National University College of Medicine, having earned his M.D. in 1983, followed by an M.S. in 1986 and a Ph.D. in 1993, specializing in neurosurgery. Currently holding the position of Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Seoul National University College of Medicine and Seoul National University Hospital, Dr. Chung has made significant contributions to the field. Specializing in epilepsy, brain tumors, and spine conditions, Dr. Chun Kee Chung also serves as the Head of the Magnetoencephalography (MEG) Center. His extensive research interests encompass neurophysiology, neuroimaging, and spinal cord pathophysiology. Dr. Chung is not only dedicated to advancing clinical expertise but is also deeply involved in medical education, mentoring students, residents, and fellows. As a Member of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology and the National Academy of Medicine of Korea, Dr. Chung's academic contributions extend to being a Professor of Neurosurgery and Brain and Cognitive Science at Seoul National University. Dr. Chung's career trajectory includes a notable period of fellowship training at the Cleveland Clinic, where he collaborated on the study of a postnatal rat model of cortical dysplasia. Since 1997, his primary focus has been on neurological and cognitive changes following brain resection in epilepsy surgery. Pioneering advancements, he established the first MEG center in Korea in 2004, contributing significantly to functional mapping algorithms. His recent research explores somatosensory interconnection with motor function, hippocampus-cortex connection in memory, and consciousness during general anesthesia. Dr. Chung's dedication to advancing neurological science is underscored by his efforts to devise external modulation techniques using intracranial electrical stimulation, as well as setting up human in vivo single-cell recording platforms in critical brain regions.
