Professor Dr. med. Karl Rössler assumed the position of Professor of Neurosurgery at the Medical University of Vienna and the directorship of the University Clinic for Neurosurgery at the Medical University of Vienna/Vienna General Hospital in July 2019. Previously, he held the position of Deputy Clinical Director at the University Clinic for Neurosurgery at the Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU). His recent research focus includes neuronavigation and intraoperative imaging in epilepsy surgery, brain tumor surgery, and vascular neurosurgery. Notably, Professor Rössler gained global recognition for pioneering discoveries in epilepsy surgery, contributing to the development of new approaches within the International League Against Epilepsy and the Surgical Therapies Commission. To facilitate his ongoing research projects, an intraoperative MRI center is being established at the Vienna University Clinic for Neurosurgery, aiming to create an international center of excellence for intraoperative imaging in neurosurgery in collaboration with the University Clinic for Radiology. Professor Rössler emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration with the neurosciences departments at the Medical University of Vienna. He envisions the creation of a "Comprehensive Center for Clinical Neurosciences" to strengthen cooperation with neurology, psychiatry, the Clinical Institute of Neurology, and the Center for Brain Research. The goal is to integrate basic research findings into new neurosurgical therapies for common diseases like epilepsy, Parkinson's, depression, and brain tumors. The Medical University of Vienna, under Professor Rössler's leadership, aims to intensify interdisciplinary cooperation in various areas such as neurosurgical spine surgery linked with trauma surgery and orthopedics, and pediatric neurosurgery linked with skull base surgery. Additionally, the university aims to play a pioneering role in gender medicine within neurosurgery. Professor Rössler is dedicated to promoting an international network of clinics, research, and education, including student and postgraduate teaching. Plans include a separate main lecture on neurosurgery and a block internship in neurosurgery within the medical curriculum at the Medical University of Vienna. His leadership is expected to enhance the international reputation of the Clinic for Neurosurgery at the Medical University in the General Hospital of the City of Vienna.
