With an illustrious career that spans over four decades, Dr. Maher has served in leading positions at prestigious institutions such as South City Hospital and the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). A graduate of Liaquat Medical College and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, Dr. Maher’s journey began with international surgical training in the UK before returning to Pakistan to revolutionize surgical care. Known for introducing bariatric and advanced laparoscopic procedures in Pakistan, he also established specialized clinics in breast, thyroid, and colorectal surgery at JPMC. Prof. Dr. Mumtaz Maher is widely regarded as the leading laparoscopic and bariatric surgery expert in Pakistan. He was the first surgeon in the country to perform a laparoscopic cholecystectomy in 1991, marking the beginning of a new era in minimally invasive surgery. At South City Hospital and JPMC, he introduced and refined keyhole surgeries for hernias, colorectal diseases, and obesity, especially laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomies and gastric banding.
